What Is Gas Free & When Is It Required?

Gas freeing is the controlled ventilation and verification of a confined space to confirm it is free from flammable,
toxic or oxygen-deficient atmospheres. A gas free certificate is typically required before hot works, inspections,
class surveys, maintenance, tank cleaning follow-ups, lay-ups or entry by crew/contractors.

How We Work

1. Assessment: Review last product, SDS and space geometry. Define ventilation and test points.
2. Ventilation: Forced ventilation and purging until target readings are achieved and stable.
3. Testing: Calibrated meters record O₂, H₂S, CO and LEL; continuous monitoring as needed.
4. Certification: If values meet limits, we issue Gas Free Certification with time/date and scope.
5. Controls: For hot work, we add precautions (fire watch, re-testing intervals, PPE and standby).

Safety & Compliance

All work follows confined-space entry and permit-to-work procedures. Instruments are traceably calibrated; readings are logged
and shared in the close-out pack. Where applicable, we coordinate with port authorities, class surveyors and yard safety teams.

We follow applicable port/class/HSE limits—typically O₂ ≈ 20.9% v/v, LEL 0%, and toxic gases below threshold values.

How long does gas freeing take?

From a few hours to a full day depending on space volume, residues, temperature and ventilation efficiency.

Can you combine with tank cleaning?

Yes. We frequently perform tank cleaning followed by Gas Free Certification for survey or hot work.
